Can I earn a living drawing porn Part 5

drawpornicon

If you’ve read the last four installments of this series, hopefully this has helped set some ground rules so you can not only make money but have a career as an erotic artist. Let’s recap some things.
One of the most important concepts to get straight with is, knowing your nature. YOU KNOW if you are more comfortable being an entrepreneur or a freelancer. You’re either comfortable with the risk of being an entrepreneur or you’re not.

If you are the entrepreneur type your focus shouldn’t be on you, it should be about creating a team. The number one mistake entrepreneurs make is trying to do it all. And usually you have to in the beginning but the secret to long term success is quitting tasks as fast as possible. Unless you’re a good programmer, you will need to hire one. If you are not a strong writer, inker, etc. you should considering hiring out for those tasks as soon as you can. Here you get paid for the vision that you bring to the world, not for writing, penciling, inking, and coloring every single page on your website.
If you want to be a freelancer, get on the Internet and not only look for publishers, but start working on assembling your tribe. Taylor Swift had a great quote. I can’t remember it verbatim but it went something like this. Back in the days artists got signed to record deals and then they got fans. Today artists get signed because they HAVE fans. When you apply for a job with a publisher be sure to let them know about your social media numbers.

If you have thousands of people who follow you on Hentai Foundry—great. If you don’t, get to work! Everyone starts at zero so don’t get discouraged. Make a promise to start today.
So you’re probably thinking, “Moose, I’m just supposed to draw and post all this free art to attract people who may or may not be into my work?” Well, yeah. If you aren’t killing your financial goals right now as an artist, that means not enough people know who the hell you are. There is a distinct correlation between the amount of prospects that you have and the amount of money that you make. Don’t take my word for it, check with your friend Google.com.

Seth Godin said, “the Internet reward relentless generosity.” If you keep putting yourself out there, sooner or later it’s going to happen for you. You can use Seth’s advice, you can call it karma, you can call it the law of sewing and reaping. Whatever you want to call it, it’s real. You want another example? You ever open a Marvel or DC Comic and see shitty art? Back in my late teens I would open a book and think, ‘I’m better than this guy’. Everything made sense in our teens, right? So I kept making sandwiches thinking I could never work for Marvel and the guy that drew that comic kept drawing.
And let’s not forget, you’re drawing porn cause you love it, right? If it feels like an obligation or if you’re only doing it because you’re trying to find fans, just quit now while you’re ahead. Keep working in that office or delivering pizzas or whatever you’re doing right now. If you’re drawing because you love what you do it doesn’t matter because you’re going to draw anyway.

If you are a freelancer at heart but would like to be an entrepreneur, hope is not lost for you. The solution is you need to get a business partner. Find someone who is an entrepreneur and who is comfortable with taking risk and who will do the all the promotion and business type things so you can focus on being an artist. Like an agent you shouldn’t have to pay this person upfront, he should be working for a percentage of the profit that you make together. Make sure you get a contract or a summary of terms in writing so it’s clear what you both expect out of each other.

I know I threw some big concepts out at you. You may even have more questions now than you did before you started reading this series. If you have questions or if something here still makes no sense, give me your questions or comments at moose at dirtycomics.com or @Dirty_Comics on Twitter. I look forward to your success.

Why can’t I draw your daughter fucking?

m_hardcore

I’m a comic book artist. I draw fiction, I draw cartoons. So please tell me why I can’t draw your teen getting fisted by orks on a space ship? And here’s the shit that really pisses me off, I can’t even draw a girl that’s 20 years old and dressed down without repercussion. They’ll Max Hardcore me for sure! Who’s Max Hardcore? I’m glad you asked, let me tell you.

Max was a pornstar and producer of his own films. Until I started watching Max’s movies back in the ‘90s I wasn’t even into hardcore. Hell, I don’t even know if I knew what hardcore was. His movies only had three scenes (which was less than the industry average) but they were great scenes and they were worth it. Max was known for forceful bj’s, hardcore anal, trash talking, peeing in gaping asses, all sorts of stuff. I don’t ever think I saw a specula in a girl’s ass before Max. He was a visionary, what can I say? Most of Max’s ‘girls’ usually had the “teen” body (e.g. his Cherry Poppers series). Most of the girls acted and played the teen role (hair in pigtails, etc.)

Most people hated Max but I loved that fucker! He was king of the anal world and he made a shit ton of cash. So what happened? His ass went to jail, that’s what happened. Between you and me, Max got a bad rap. Wiki said, actress Mya Mason stated during one verbal exchange that she was a minor. Because she said that, he spent two and a half years in prison (2009–2011). And the kicker is almost all of his movies were pulled. Some were repackaged taking out the questionable material but a lot of great porn got taken away.

Here’s where the hypocrisy kills me. I draw a girl who’s a mid teen fucking, I’m a pervert and I’m potentially violating rules. But here’s the kicker, mid teens olds are fucking! According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the year 2007, 35% of US high school students were currently sexually active and 47.8% of US high school students reported having had sexual intercourse.

And if you need a little more bureaucracy we adult websites get heat from the vendors who process payments for us (who get heat on them from the credit card companies). We have to adhere to state and federal laws of course but their rules are even more stringent. For example Zombaio does not allow the word tentacle to be present on any site they process payments for. That shoots down 90% of the hentai comics I read…. So what do we do? Water down our art for the censors or draw what we want to and risk the consequences?

If you look at my art and many other artists online, we walk a fine line. I used to watch the Dave Chappelle show and he used to joke around about pushing the envelope on his show basically waiting to get fired or fined by the FCC. That’s how I approach my art. While everyone I draw on the site is of legal age, I push the envelope when I can.

What do you think? Do you think us artists should be regulated so heavily? Are cartoons corrupting our society? E-mail me at Moose at DirtyComics .com or catch me on Twitter @Dirty_Comics . Join our newsletter below for updates and free pics.

How glistening ass sparked a series

coaching

By Karmagik

The Very Physical Education comic started off with a very simple idea. I wanted to do a comic with original characters, starting with a gym teacher who is a bombshell. The first issue grew pretty quickly from there. The idea of a large breasted teacher fooling around with students was very appealing to me. And, of course, the gym locker rooms provided plenty of opportunities for young naked bodies on display. So out of that, a comic was born.

After writing what I thought would probably be a one-shot, short 10 page comic, Moose and I both enjoyed the characters so much, we just wanted to tell more stories with them. So, a second issue of the comic is in the works now. I feel pretty confident a large portion of Moose’s interest in seeing more of the comic came in the form of a large, glistening, wet, black booty getting groped in the shower. I dare say his level of interest may be directly related to the size of Shawna’s ass.

The next comic will be much longer than the first. It will showcase some of the characters from the first comic, all finding their own ways to improve sexual education at the school. Ms. Cassaday will, of course, still be a prominently featured character, but we’ll spend a lot more time with characters like the lovely young ladies soaping and groping in the shower from Issue 1, Lacey and Shawna. Plus, we’ll get into seeing more of the faculty and students of the Cherry High School. After all, Ms. Cassaday isn’t the only one out there capable of providing a proper physical education.

Can I earn a living drawing porn? Part 4

drawpornicon

In part three I mentioned the concept of having 1000 True Fans, or hell, any fans at all. We also talked about the importance of marketing your content with a niche. Now that that’s out of the way, there’s some questions that you need to answer to be successful. Who are you? What do you have?  Why should I buy it from you?  Can I trust you?

Let’s get, “who you are” out of the way. What I mean by this is, you need to tell your story. My story is, ‘I’m a former Marvel Comics artist who got bored drawing and painting superhero comics so I decided to focus on drawing porn because it’s more fun’. Your story could be you drew filth because you went to a catholic school, or because your art teacher called you a loser, or perhaps you’re a woman and someone told you only men could do this professionally. Whatever your story is, know that it is very important.   Art is different but yet it can be pretty similar. Our individual stories and what drives us is VERY different, and fans will connect with that.  In some cases before your actual artwork.

What do you have?  Again, this is where the niche helps. If you’re like me, it’s butts, maybe it’s boobs, babes, or parodies. What’s really effective is if you can integrate your story into why you produce your content. For example, let’s say our site is the big boob Latina MILF site from chapter 3. It would go something like this.

“I’m Rocketdog and when I was growing up, my best friend’s family was from Brazil. His mom had the biggest boobs I had ever seen!  Ever since I’ve been obsessed with looking at and drawing pinups and comics of Latina MILFs with huge knockers.”

Sounds easy, right?  Well, sometimes.  Just keep thinking about why you decide to draw porn for a living and your story will shape up.

Next.   Why should they buy big boob Latina MILF content from you?  Whether there’s two or 100 other sites out there, why should they buy comics from you?  Here’s where being an artist is great because, if they love your art/sample content, this may help answer this question.  Another way to look at this is, in business, you are solving problems.  That person who is surfing the Internet looking for content has a problem.  Maybe they want to read a Latina MILF comic with lots of build up, maybe they want pinups, maybe they’re into something torrid and kinda naughty, they’re looking for someone to solve this problem.  And if they think you can solve it, they will buy.

Another term businesses use is unique selling proposition (or USP).   What’s that one unique thing that makes what you do special?  You could say, it’s your niche since at the moment, you think you’re the only big boob Latina MILF site out there but that’s not what I’m talking about.  For example Dominos Pizza built their business in the ‘80s by promising pizza in 30 or less.  Their USP was selling a fast lunch, not great pizza.  McDonald’s sells convenience, not food.  Neiman Marcus sells luxury, not sweaters.  In the parameters of your ‘story’, what do you want to do that no one else can do?  And yes, once you do it people will copy the hell out of you, but they are not you so don’t worry about them.

The last questions is to answer is that of trust.  Trust is important because most people don’t buy until they trust you on some level.  Trust may begin with your story.  Maybe someone knew a big boob MILF growing up and immediately resonated with your site.  Maybe it’s your update schedule. Once they see you update your site with frequency, maybe that’s what tips the scales in your favor.  This is also where social media is your friend.  If someone follows you on Hentai Foundry for a year and they see your work and/or blogging, that may earn trust that will tip the scale for them to purchase.

The media loves saying how everyone is broke and because of the recession or unemployment, under-employment, etc. people still aren’t buying.  Don’t believe that crap!  People still buy, but they are holding on to their money longer.  Doing these things I talked about will help people learn who you are and trust you, and over time they will buy.  Not everyone, just a few people who really love your art and your vision.

In part 5 I’ll sum it all up. If you have any questions e-mail me at Moose at DirtyComics.com or on Twitter @Dirty_Comics.  Sign up for our newsletter for more tutorials and free cartoons.
