Those wardrobe malfunctions can be killer!
Beautiful melons on display at the fruit stand…
I’ve colored comics for over a decade and I’m always trying to figure out and/or test new ways to color lineart. I’ve seen artists start in B&W and do a myriad of techniques and generally I’m too lazy to try these techniques outside of sketching. In the last Ms. Cross page I painted, I decided to isolate the shadows on the entire page.
Usually when I color comics, I “flat” the comics using a flat color and then I add shadows and highlights. For a while I had been considering isolating the shadows to see how things would come out.
What I did here is I put a layer of 100% white above the flat colors. On a separate layer I used two colors (one lighter one darker) for shadows. Once I finished chizel in the shadows, I set the the layer to multiply and removed the white layer.
Here’s the finished image. Once I add the shadow layer and a few lighlights the image is done. It took longer for me to color this way but I do like the result. Coloring this way kept me 100% focused on the shadows and I like that part. If you try it, let me know if you like it.
